CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change is very much in the news these days, and every day another disaster, flooding, earthquake, stories of ever rising sea temperatures. We have been working in the background on this subject for many years, and saw the North Highland Way across the north of Scotland as a “green” project from the outset. We published books about it, and sustainable transport. We even have a magazine. Also available on Kindle.

Draft contents for July issue:

  1. Update to the North Highland Way, including proposals for disabled access being included in the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
  2. Biodiversity
  3. Output from the Lincolnshire Show
  4. Report from Queens University
  5. Report from Heriot Watt University – economics
  6. Course update and more
  7. Interviews with local businessmen
  8. Report from Orca Watch
  9. Research on fuel consumption, cards and matters in the Northern Highlands.

Looking at Scotland, they are doing some good work, but unfortunately there is no joined up thinking, which is not unusual. Tina Marshall Consultancy Ltd (not necessarily the Friends in general. That is their choice) supports the Friends of the Earth on this project.

Here they challenge in the Court.

The developer of the North Highland Way is on the Lincolnshire Access Forum.

There is actually no commitment to Climate Change in the far north of Scotland. The author has written a book about it already, and will be publishing another one at the end of 2024.

FARMING

The farmers are fighting back. Information in our Environmental News, and look out for the Private Members Bill

The developer fought for the farmers when the Scottish Outdoor Access Code was being developed and will continue to do so.

GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE WEEK

We have launched the Global Climate Change Week and are working on the details.

Friends of the North Highland Way

How is The Highland Council area doing on Climate Change compared to Aberdeenshire? We will see. We regularly attend Climate Change events, including watching the Climate Change Committee proceedings on the Highland Council archive, or live if we can.

SCIENCE ON THE NORTH HIGHLAND WAY

Bog myrtle, not found on the beautiful Orkney Islands

In April 2023, we developed the concept of Science on the North Highland Way and started looking at potential projects. One of them is biodiversity, and in March 2024 we started to look at the UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme. We started to get some very interesting results, even that early in the year.

WASTE

You can find us on EatMyCarbon, can direct you to waste outlets here sponsored by Argos and we do our own food waste projects with are included in the Environmental News.

EDUCATION

The education page will tell you more, and we now start to look at leafy Lincolnshire. Get their toolkit. We will be looking for an apprentice as from June 2024. Express your interest here. The prequalifying questionnaire is here. Must live in the Lincolnshire area and be available for interview at the Lincolnshire Show.

We work with Forestry and Lands and other public services, who gave us links to their environmental databases.
