OUR RESEARCH CENTRE

The author is a part time student at Heriot Watt University, studying the Economics of Renewable Energy as well as project manager for the North Highland Way project. Her favourite environmentalist is Rachel Carson.

Carson’s “Silent Spring”, but we can, with political will and education go even further. In Northern Ireland, for example, the kids don’t even do an A Level in environmental science. Sure, they study biology and there are some excellent field studies for the kids, and adults for that matter. The leaders are experts in their field, but in general don’t know how to market them. Some people just want to go for a nice walk and not think about what the soil contains or how climate change affects this species of bird or that species of bird. Or the plants for that matter.”

She also ran a solar energy company in Spain in the late 1980s. The company was the agent for BP Solar in Barcelona.

Module 5 – A research project based around database creation and logging information. We look at app development with Chris.

“Tina Irving also carried out an environmental control exercise of the underlying databases which hold the data for the public bodies   It is not possible for this data to be so distributed and still control the state of the environment.  She has recommended to the Highland Council that they join the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and get a baseline assessment.  She also helped bring the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and the Land Reform Act to the table, and of course the multi-use route of the North Highland Way.  None of this with any public cash.  There is an ongoing requirement for updating Core Path Networks and the money would be used for consultations regarding this and the consultative document on the EU Directives.

All of this supports the green economy, and in particular the Highland Council’s ambition to become a green destination.”
